Kite: Toys & Baby Store Theme for OpenCart

Overview

Kite is a classic, conversion-first storefront theme for kids, toys and baby stores on OpenCart 4.x and 3.0.x by Kavio Labs. It is built for shops where parents and gift givers shop by age, ask "what suits a five-year-old?" and want to know a toy is safe before they buy.

What you get

• Shop by age. The first menu item opens a panel with the age steps (0-12 months, 1-2 years, 3-4 years and so on) as coloured tiles, plus your biggest brands. The steps come from a filter group you choose.
• Growth chart. The home page shows the same age steps as bars that grow taller with age, like a height chart on a door frame. Each bar opens the category products that carry that age filter, with the number of products.
• Gift finder. Three choosers (age, interest, budget) narrow a pool of about 24 bestsellers, new arrivals and offers right in the browser, with no page load. The answer is "6 gifts that fit" with real product cards.
• Pastel toy-box cards. Every product stands on a pastel well that cycles through six tones, with an age chip, a safety shield, round colour swatches, the brand line, rating, price and a price per piece ("$0.45 / pc"). Badges: sale, New, Eco, Wooden, Gift set, Low stock.
• Safety first. A "Safety" attribute ("Safety tested, Non-toxic finishes, BPA free") becomes a shield on cards and chips on the product page. A "Warning" attribute ("Small parts: not suitable for children under 3 years") becomes a boxed notice under the title.
• Gift wrap and wish list. The delivery panel carries a gift wrap line, the product page has a labelled Add to wish list button with a note, and a wish list band closes the home page.
• Home sections. Campaign hero with a countdown and brand deal tiles, trust row, tabs (new arrivals, best sellers, sale), shop by interest tiles with icons, a sale band with real countdowns, a pocket-money row, a Make it a gift set builder with one Add to cart, brand tiles, play ideas cards and reviews. Each can be switched off.
• Product page. Gallery with hover zoom, age and safety chips, brand line, colour picker with a large preview, size chips, reward points line, delivery panel (delivery dates, gift wrap, returns), tabs for details, safety and care, in the box and reviews, and Make it a gift set (frequently bought together).
• Four presets. Playroom (sunny, navy awning, yellow buttons), Nursery (soft white, teal buttons, wave edge), Woodland (oat and forest green, stitched outlines) and Bedtime (midnight-blue dark edition). All text colours pass WCAG AA contrast.
• Self-hosted fonts. Fredoka and Nunito (SIL Open Font License 1.1). Kite makes no requests to font CDNs.
• Safe to install. No core file changes and no OCMOD. A licence problem never blocks the store or the admin panel.

On a phone the menu becomes a slide-in drawer, the hero shows its text first and the home page stacks into one column.

Works with

Other extensions keep working: Kite keeps the core ids of the product form and the mini cart. Extensions that add buttons to the product page appear under Add to cart.

Versions

Licence

One licence covers both packages. The first 14 days are a trial. Without a valid licence the store keeps working and the theme settings page shows a reminder.

Installation

OpenCart 4.x

1. Go to Extensions > Installer and upload kv_theme_kite.ocmod.zip. Click Install (the green + button) next to it.
2. Go to Extensions > Extensions, choose the type Themes, and click Install next to Kite Toys and Baby Store Theme by Kavio Labs.
3. Click Edit, check that Status is on, choose a preset and save.
4. Go to System > Settings, edit your store, and on the General tab set Theme to Kite Toys and Baby Store Theme by Kavio Labs. Save.

OpenCart 4 has no theme folders. Kite is a theme extension: it swaps in its own templates while it is the store's theme and switched on. Switch the store back to Default to return to the stock look at any time. The settings page tells you whether Kite is the active theme.

OpenCart 3.0.x

1. Go to Extensions > Installer and upload kv_theme_kite-oc3.ocmod.zip.
2. Go to Extensions > Modifications and click Refresh (the blue button).
3. Go to Extensions > Extensions, choose Themes, click Install next to Kite Toys and Baby Store Theme by Kavio Labs, then Edit, check Status and save.
4. Go to System > Settings, edit your store, open the Option tab and set Template to Kite Toys and Baby Store Theme by Kavio Labs. Save.

On OpenCart 3 the image sizes and the number of products per page for the theme are on the Listing & images tab of the theme settings.

Set up your data

Kite reads your normal catalogue data. Before you start:

1. Ages. Add a filter group named "Age group" (Catalog > Filters) with the steps in sort order, for example 0-12 months, 1-2 years, 3-4 years, 5-7 years, 8-11 years, 12+ years, and give your products the matching filters. They fill the Shop by age panel, the growth chart, the age chips above category lists and the gift finder. Add an attribute "Age" with a short text such as "3-7 years" for the age chip on cards.
2. Interests. Add a filter group "Interest" (Building, Pretend play, Puzzles and games and so on) for the gift finder.
3. Brands. Add manufacturers and assign them to products. They fill the brand deal tiles, the brands row and the brand chips on category pages.
4. Safety. Add attributes "Safety" ("Safety tested, Non-toxic finishes"), "Warning" ("Small parts: not suitable for children under 3 years"), "Care" and "In the box". Safety shows as a shield on cards and as chips on the product page; Care and In the box become their own tabs.
5. Colours. Add an option named "Colour" (radio) with one value per colour. Give each value an image, or name it with a colour word (Mint, Sky, Coral).
6. Pieces. An attribute "Pieces" ("100 pcs") gives the price per piece on cards and the product page.
7. Special prices. Give products a special price with an end date to get countdowns and the brand deal tiles with their end dates.
8. Labels. An attribute "Label" such as Eco or Gift set becomes a badge.
9. Related products. Add two products without required options as related products to get Make it a gift set.

Update

Upload the new package the same way and refresh modifications on OpenCart 3. Your settings are kept in the store settings.

Uninstall

Switch the store theme back to Default, then uninstall Kite from Extensions > Extensions > Themes.

Configuration

Open Extensions > Extensions > Themes > Kite > Edit. Every storefront text you can change is on one of these tabs. A section that is switched off or has an empty title is not shown.

General

• Status and Preset (Playroom, Nursery, Woodland, Bedtime). Text logo is shown beside or instead of the logo image; wrap one word in *stars* to set it in the accent colour (Skylark *Toys*).
• Toy-box wells put products on pastel wells that cycle through six tones; off gives a plain white well. Hover zoom and Delivery panel switch product page features.

Header & footer

Three top band messages, the label of the Shop by age menu item (empty hides the panel), the number of categories in the menu, the label of the Sale pill (links to the Specials page), an optional second link, the search placeholder, the wish list band, the footer text and help card, and the payment chips (plain text, no logos).

Home page

Campaign hero (label, title, text, button, product id, up to four brand ids), growth chart, gift finder, trust row, tabs, shop by interest tiles, sale band, pocket-money row, gift set builder, brands row, play ideas and reviews.

• Product id fields take comma lists of product ids, for example 42, 57. Empty fields use an automatic source: the best discounted product for the hero, the brands with the biggest running discounts for the brand tiles, products on special for the sale band, orders then views for best sellers, the newest products under the maximum price for the pocket-money row.
• Link fields take a category id (20 or 20_27), an information page as i:<id> or a URL.
• Age filter group: the name of a filter group from Catalog > Filters (default "Age group"). Create the steps in sort order (0-12 months, 1-2 years, 3-4 years, 5-7 years, 8-11 years, 12+ years) and give them to your products. The same group feeds the menu panel, the growth chart, the age chips on category pages and the gift finder.
• Gift finder: the interest filter group (default "Interest") and the budget steps (default 15|30|50|100, in the store currency). The finder works on a pool of about 24 bestsellers, new arrivals and offers that are in stock.
• Shop by interest tiles are separated by ;. Building is a search for the word, Building|20 or Building|i:5 or Building|https://... link to a category, page or URL. The icon follows the words (build, pretend, art, science, puzzle, outdoor, music, baby).
• Reviews need real quotes. Write only real figures.

Product data

• Age attribute: a short text such as 0-12 months, 3-7 years or 5+ years for the coloured age chip. The colour follows the lowest age.
• Safety attribute: a comma list such as Safety tested, Non-toxic finishes, BPA free. Cards show a shield, the product page shows each item as a chip. Warning attribute: a notice such as Small parts: not suitable for children under 3 years. shown in a box under the title. Care and In the box attributes become their own tabs.
• Colour option names and Chip option names: options with these names get round colour swatches or chips. Swatch colour comes from the option value image, otherwise from the value name (Mint, Sky, Coral ...).
• Range and Colour attributes: sell each colour as its own product and give them the same Range value to show colour swatches on cards.
• Pieces attribute: a value like 100 pcs or 2 pieces produces the price per piece ("$0.45 / pc") on cards and the product page.
• Delivery time attribute, Label attribute (for example Eco, Gift set, Wooden; Eco, wooden and organic show in green), New tag days, Low stock tag, the in-stock line, gift wrap and returns lines, the wish list note, and Make it a gift set (frequently bought together).

Listing & images (OpenCart 3 only)

Products per page and the image sizes. On OpenCart 4 these are in System > Settings > Image. Kite shows products on square wells: 520 x 520 on cards and 800 x 800 on the product page work well.

Licence

Paste the licence key from your Kavio Labs account. Without a key the theme keeps working and the page shows a notice.

FAQ

Does Kite change core files or use OCMOD?

No. On OpenCart 4 it is a theme extension that uses events; on OpenCart 3 it is a normal theme directory plus events.

Why is the Shop by age item missing?

It needs a filter group with the name on the Home page tab (default "Age group") that contains filters, and a label on the Header & footer tab. The growth chart and the age chips on category pages use the same group.

Why does a card show no age chip?

The chip comes from the attribute named in Age attribute (default "Age"). Products without it show no chip. The filters of the age group do not need this attribute; they power the menu, the chart and the gift finder.

Why does the gift finder only show some products?

It narrows a pool of about 24 products: bestsellers, new arrivals and offers that are in stock. A product needs the matching age or interest filter to appear when that choice is made, and a price at or under the chosen budget.

Why is the budget chooser missing?

It reads the steps in Gift finder: budget steps (default 15|30|50|100, in the store currency). An empty setting hides it.

Why do my cards show no colour swatches?

Swatches come from an option named in Colour option names (default Colour, Color), or from sibling products with the same Range attribute. Products without them show no swatches.

Where does the small-parts warning come from?

From the attribute named in Warning attribute (default "Warning"). Only products that have it show the notice.

Why do the brand deal tiles show "6 products" instead of a discount?

A brand shows "Up to N% off" while one of its products has a running special price. Otherwise the tile shows the product count.

Why does a card show no countdown?

The countdown needs a special price with an end date less than 60 days away.

How is the price per piece calculated?

The price (with tax as your store shows it) divided by the number in the Pieces attribute ("100 pcs"). It is a display line only.

Can I use it with a multi-store setup?

Yes. Settings are stored per store.

What if the licence is missing or expired?

The storefront and the admin panel keep working. The theme settings page shows a reminder.

Does it make external requests?

Only the licence check from the admin settings page. Fonts are served from your store.

How do I go back to the stock look?

Set the store theme to Default.
